All leadership roles have evolved over a period be it due to changing consumer preferences, rapidly changing technology or an ever-evolving regulatory framework. However, the role of finance leaders which too was seeing a gradual evolution changed even faster during the pandemic. It was during this period that CFOs got involved with all functions of an organization be it supply chain and manufacturing, sales and marketing, HR and Admin or Technology and Sustainability. They worked across all functions of the organization during this period to ensure more predictability and accuracy. They had to ensure that the home fires were burning. Several CFOs went beyond by ensuring that the ecosystems and environments they operated in were also looked after. The CFO during this period was clearly the go to person for CEOs.

It was in 2021 that BW Businessworld predicted that more of the CEO and MD vacant roles would get filled by CFOs. And as we can see that prediction has been accurate with a lot more CFOs moving to the leadership role. And the rest are CEO’s-in-waiting redefining leadership.

Given the change in their roles and functions, several finance leaders have been realigning their teams due to the expansion of the finance function. In research that we did with CFOs, it emerged that a gap being faced by CFOs and the finance function is that of manpower who have the requisite skills to take on these additional functions. How exactly does the finance office need to look to take on these additional functions?

This conference titled, The Future of The Finance Office aims to understand the challenges in these changes and help the finance ecosystem have a smooth transition.

Keynote Address

Prof. (Dr.) Gourav Vallabh works on the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) and is a Professor of Finance. He is a distinguished academician, financial expert, and public policy contributor with over 25 years of experience across teaching, research, consulting, and institution building. A Certified Financial Risk Manager (GARP, USA) and Chartered Accountant, he has advised multiple government bodies, served on national task forces, and held leadership roles in premier institutions like XLRI. Widely published and a sought-after speaker, he combines deep academic insight with hands-on experience in finance, policy, and governance.
