Engineering Ranking 2019

INTRODUCTION

The modern world academic rankings of educational institutions began in 2003 with a mandate from the Chinese government to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University to benchmark Chinese universities against their Western counterparts. Today, there are over two dozen ranking agencies across the world creating a range of lists with the purpose of helping students, parents and governments form informed opinions.

In India, the University System was established in 1857 with three British creations- University of Madras, Calcutta and Bombay. Apart from the usual classifications as Public & Private, Universities in India are broadly classified as Institutions of National Importance, Central, State, State Private, and Deemed to Be Universities. Colleges, on the other hand are differentiated as Public, Private, Government Aided, Affiliated, and so on. If these classifications were not entangled enough themselves, the system is further plagued by overtly complex regulations governing the formation, financing, and functioning of the regulatory & accreditation authorities such as the UGC, AICTE, NBA, NAAC, and other organizations.

After understanding the circumstances in India, particularly the varying challenges in different States of the country BW has made Engineering rankings easier through the following:

  1. BW Businessworld has designed a comprehensive assessment framework with the purpose of providing high quality, ethical and independent comparison about the quality of engineering and technology schools across the country.
  2. Through multiple interactions with the leading researchers & employers, engineering rankings becomes quick and easy.

WHY ENGINEERING RANKINGS

The global higher education scene is alive with innovation and change. Globally, engineering institutions are reforming, adapting and revolutionising. Indian engineering institutions can no longer do what they have always been doing, and expect to maintain or improve their position in the national or global rankings.

  • With 800 Million persons below 35 years of age, the Indian work force is considered a demographic dividend. However, recent reports about unemployability of Indian youth, particularly in Engineering & Management studies have put a question mark on the real value of this dividend.
  • Poor quality education system has created a serious employability issue. According to various studies over 80% of Indian Engineers are unemployable.
  • By 2027, India will have the world’s largest workforce (between 15 and 64 years) crossing a billion and outpacing China.
  • India has its own set of challenges, with extremely low Gross Enrolment Rate (GER) social inclusion is on top of the agenda.
  • Engineering institutions in India is falling short on indicators like Research Productivity, Innovation & Patents, International Student Enrolment, Research Citations etc. that form bulk of the score across most global ranking frameworks.

WHY BW ENGINEERING RANKINGS 2019

Understanding the special circumstances in India & particularly the varying challenges in different States of the country, BW Businessworld after consultations with seasoned experts from India and abroad and after multiple interactions with the leading academicians, scholars, researchers & employers have conceived and designed a comprehensive assessment framework with the purpose of providing an high quality, ethical, independent comparison of the quality of Engineering & Technology Schools across the Country, based on a set of criteria that apply to Indian higher education and yet is globally flavoured.
